In a devastating incident, a 19-year-old man, Ramon Alvarez, who was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first child, was fatally shot in East Harlem. The gunman, identified as Jose Rodriguez, has been charged with murder, assault, and weapons possession.

The tragic event unfolded early Wednesday morning inside an apartment on E. 112th St. near Third Ave., part of NYCHA’s Jefferson Houses. Rodriguez, who is homeless, forcibly entered the apartment of his ex-girlfriend, Melidy Adega, and began shooting.

Adega, who is also the victim’s aunt, recounted the terrifying ordeal, stating that Rodriguez fired shots indiscriminately, hitting Alvarez, who had rushed into the room upon hearing the commotion. Adega narrowly escaped being shot herself when she managed to grab the gun barrel as Rodriguez aimed at her face.

Despite being conscious when paramedics arrived, Alvarez’s condition worsened, and he succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Harlem Hospital.

Rodriguez fled the scene on a bicycle, abandoning the weapon, but was apprehended by police late Thursday. His extensive criminal history includes 27 prior arrests, 17 of which are felonies.
