Lamor Whitehead, known colloquially as the ‘Bling Bishop,’ faced a sad scene in Manhattan federal court as he awaited sentencing, dressed in muted prison attire. The once flamboyant Brooklyn pastor, who flaunted designer suits, extravagant jewelry, and drove a Rolls Royce, was now confronting the consequences of his financial misconduct.
Whitehead, 45, received a nine-year prison sentence following his conviction for defrauding Pauline Anderson, a 58-year-old nurse and mother of one of his congregation members. Anderson entrusted him with $90,000, earmarked for a home renovation, only to discover that he had diverted the funds for personal use, including high-end purchases at Louis Vuitton and payments towards a BMW.
During the sentencing hearing, emotions ran high as Anderson tearfully recounted the profound impact of Whitehead’s betrayal, lamenting the loss of her entire retirement savings. Her son, Rasheed, also addressed the court, describing the devastating ripple effects of Whitehead’s actions on their family.
In a lengthy and impassioned speech to the court, Whitehead expressed remorse but maintained his innocence, arguing that he was a pillar of the community who had dedicated himself to charitable works and youth mentorship programs. He invoked his alleged ties to prominent city and state officials, including Mayor Eric Adams and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, although none were present in court to support him.
Judge Lorna Schofield, however, remained unmoved by Whitehead’s claims of remorse, emphasizing the severity of his crimes and their profound impact on the victims. She noted his previous conviction for a $2 million identity theft scheme, underscoring his history of financial dishonesty and the high risk of recidivism.
Whitehead’s attorney, Dawn Florio, appealed for leniency, citing his alleged post-traumatic stress disorder following a previous robbery incident during a live-streamed sermon. Despite these pleas, Judge Schofield ordered Whitehead to serve nine years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
